Depression can affect anybody, regardless of age, gender, income or profession though some groups are more susceptible that others. Depression is quite commonly experienced, affecting one in six people at some point in their lives. One in fifteen adults will experience depression in a given year. Women are more likely to experience depression than men. Fortunately, there are options for treating depression with counselling.

Depression symptoms can vary from mild to severe and can include:

  • Depressed mood and feelings of sadness
  • Loss of interest or pleasure in activities once enjoyed
  • Changes in appetite — weight loss or gain unrelated to dieting
  • Difficulty sleeping or oversleeping
  • Feeling fatigued or low energy
  • Increase in purposeless physical activity (e.g., hand-wringing or pacing) or slowed movements and speech (actions observable by others)
  • Feelings of worthlessness or guilt
  • Cognitive effects like difficulty concentrating, making decisions, difficulty thinking
  • Suicidal thoughts or fantasizing about death

An official diagnosis of depression is typically only if you’ve experienced these symptoms of depression for a period of more that 2 weeks. There are also medical conditions that can present like depression such as thyroid problems, vitamin deficiency or brain tumor. It is therefore very important to rule out other medical conditions by visiting your medical doctor. If you don’t have a family doctor, we would recommend you try a Naturopathic Doctor.

You are not alone and we’re here to help get you back on track. We offer a free 30 minute consult to any new patient who wants to try our services to see if we’re the right fit for you. If you suspect you are suffering from Clinical Depression, you can complete the survey below which is used by mental healthcare professionals to measure depression symptoms.

INTERPRETING THE BECK DEPRESSION SURVEY

Now that you have completed the questionnaire, add up the score for each of the twenty-one questions by counting the number to the right of each question you marked. The highest possible total for the whole test would be sixty-three. This would mean you circled number three on all twenty-one questions. Since the lowest possible score for each question is zero, the lowest possible score for the test would be zero. This would mean you circles zero on each question. You can evaluate your depression level according to the table below.

Total Score____________________

Levels of Depression
1-10 These ups and downs are considered normal
11-16  Mild mood disturbance
17-20 Borderline clinical depression
21-30 Moderate depression
31-40 Severe depression over
40 Extreme depression

If you scored 17 or higher, we would recommend that you consider seeking some help. A great place to start is a FREE PHONE CONSULT with one of our Registered Clinical Counsellors. You can learn more about counselling services offered at Remedy Wellness Centre HERE (ADD LINK)
